Change Differential oil - pictures.

Hi folks -

I chaged out the fluid in a couple of diff's that last couple of days - thought I would share pics - again - I was surprised at how DIRTY the fluid coming out was. - my car has right at 40k miles on it.

Here is the differential drain plug:

Both the fill and drain plugs on the diff are 10mm allen sockets and they are kinda hard to get to, so I used a 13mm deep-well socket and a small extention to leverage the allen wrench:

Here is the location of the fill plug -

And finally - you need to make sure not to lose the crush-washers, here is a picture showing the washers as they are on the plugs:

I used the same $10 pump to pump the Red Line light gear oil into the diff.

best regards -

Hi burner -

The Red Line light oil I used has the hypoid modifiers in it - no need to add it with this stuff.

I used to use the GM gear lube and friction modifier in my Firebirds - the only thing I would notice if I did not use the additive was that sometimes the rear would "chatter" when turning sharp corners at slow speeds.

Interestingly, the GM gear oil and additive was more expensive than the (in my opinion) better Red Line oil.

I wanted all of the fluids changed before I drive it to Dallas next week (30 March) to get my headers installed and a dyno tune done by LGM -

Thanks for the pics...I'm at 38,000 miles and was just wondering about this. Definitely will be a big help for identifying the plugs.

Hi RPM -

My pleasure!

You will need a 10mm hex wrench (allen wrench) to remove the plugs on the diff. You can see I used a 10mm deep well socket and an extention as a "handle" for leverage.

best regards -

Did the whole fluid change thing at MQQNs a few weeks back. Not a bad job at all, except for needing an extra hand to pump the fluids while making sure the pump hose is in the fluid jug on one end and in the diff or tranny on the other end. Zuti
